LJH Students Sweep History Day Competition
Submitted by Jennifer Dunson, Livingston Junior High

Livingston Junior High School - On Friday, February 22, Livingston Junior High GT students competed in the National History Day regional competition hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s history department. This was the 3rd year Livingston has competed in National History Day and the saying “Third time’s the charm” certainly held true. There were three schools competing in eight event categories, and Livingston Junior High students were awarded the top places in every event. First and second place winners will advance to the state competition in Austin where winners from all 23 regional competitions will compete again for top honors. LJH had 25 students and 16 projects qualify to attend the state competition.
This year’s competition theme is “Conflict and Compromise”. 7th grade students AD Glover, Daniel Munson, Annie Robison, and Louisa Santoyo were awarded the “Best of East Texas” for the best project on an East Texas topic. These students presented their exhibit entitled “The Lake that Changed East Texas”. They explained the conflicts that Polk County faced when establishing Lake Livingston. “Best of Show” honors were awarded to Mackenzie Gaylord for her exhibit on the Galveston Hurricane and Dana Smith for her website on Japanese Internment Camps during World War II. These students, along with the Best of Show winners from all of the other regionals, will be honored at the awards ceremony in Austin.
