Students Helping Our Earth AND Our Earth Helping Students
Submitted by 2nd Grade Teachers, Timber Creek Elementary

Timber Creek Elementary- Recently the 2nd graders at Timber Creek have been learning about the many ways that they can help our Earth. The students learned that the first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970. As the millions of people across the country made promises to help the Earth on the first Earth Day, the 2nd graders made promises on how they can help the Earth now and in the future. Some of the promises made were to use less water when I take my shower, turn off the light in my room when I leave, pick up trash in my yard, turn off the water when brushing my teeth, and reuse bags at the grocery store. After much discussion of how we can help our Earth, the students discussed ways the Earth helps us! The students learned about solar energy through a "solar s'mores" activity. For this activity the students used a homemade oven made from a pizza box with foil, black construction paper, and clear plastic wrap. The students put together their s'more and then put the ovens in the sun. After 2 hours, we discovered that we didn't need a campfire to create a yummy s'more!

*Thank you to Ci Ci's Pizza for donating the 16 pizza boxes used for this exciting solar energy experiment!
