EGGSperimental!
Submitted by Sue Ann McQueen, Pine Ridge Elementary

Pine Ridge Elementary -  What happens when you put one raw egg in water and one raw egg in vinegar for five days?  First Graders at PRE are hypothesizing, observing, questioning, and documenting any and all possible changes throughout the days.

Hydro-Growing
Submitted by Hattie Criswell, Pine Ridge Elementary

Pine Ridge Elementary - Mrs. Criswell’s third grade classes are studying life science.   As part of our study, they created seed sprouters and in the sprouters, they placed a piece of popcorn, a sunflower, a bean, and a pea.  The students have been trying to see if it is possible to grow seeds without soil.  Students have been surprised at the changes in the seeds each day and especially in the sprouts.  Wow!  It is possible to grow seed without soil!

A SENSE of Wonder!
Submitted by Sue Ann McQueen, Pine Ridge Elementary

Pine Ridge Elementary - While studying the five senses, First Graders at PRE were blindfolded and asked to find their way down a familiar path to the classroom utilizing their memory skills and senses of touch and hearing.  Once they entered the classroom and found their desk, their sense of smell was heightened by aromas given off from the snacks which lay in front of them.  Still blindfolded, students tried to guess the items on their plates through their sense of smell, touch and taste.  After the blindfolds were removed, the snacks were enjoyed and students continued the lesson with a transition into adjectives and writing.

Future Writers of America
Submitted by Sue Ann McQueen, Pine Ridge Elementary

Pine Ridge Elementary -   The writing process was a success!  All students became published authors and illustrators as each of the 8 first grade classes at PRE published their first book.   The writers completed each individual step of the process by prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing their masterpieces.  Parents were given the opportunity to purchase the books sight unseen as precious keepsakes.

Jumping Into Math
Submitted by Gayle Colburn, Timber Creek Elementary

Timber Creek Elementary - Addition problems keep Mrs. Gayle Colburn's Kindergarten class jumping!!   When given an addition problem, the students must jump to the correct answer on our math mat.  There are plenty of flying feet, grins and giggles as the students learn to add!

Walking With Dinosaurs-The Live Experience!
Submitted by Janie Prather, Livingston High School

Livingston High School - On Thursday, April 3rd, a group of students from LHS traveled to the Toyota Center in Houston to see the awesome dinosaur show, "Walking With Dinosaurs-The Live Experience". This educational and entertaining event will be on tour in North America for the next two years. Being able to see these life-sized creatures really brought to life our study of dinosaurs. You really can't imagine how big they must have been until you see these robotic dinosaurs walk through the forest, and fight for survival and supremacy. Students in Mrs. Prather's class enjoyed seeing these dinosaurs come to life!

Physical Fitness Announcement in Lion Country
Submitted by Coach Pennee Hall, LISD Athletics

Livingston High School - In compliance with Senate Bill 530, all grades 3-12 students in Texas must take the FITNESSGRAM fitness assessment. This is the first year that all Texas school districts must meet this requirement. The assessment is not based on athletic ability but on good health. The assessment will include measurements of aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition. This is not a pass or fail test. FITNESSGRAM is a tool to help determine needs and serve as a guide for planning a personalized physical activity program.

The test will not affect grades in any way. The information gathered will be sent to the Texas Education Agency, which will release a report with District and campus results. No individual scores will be made public, but scores will be available to parents who file a written request. Livingston Independent School District believes that providing health-related fitness information will lead toward a healthier lifestyle. A healthy student is better prepared to learn and preform, in all aspects of life. Contact the physical education teacher on your campus, or go to http://www.fitnessgram.net/texas for more information.
