Pine Ridge Third Grade TAKS Night is Fun for Everyone
Submitted by Julie Crown, Livingston High School Student

Third grade students and parents attended a special TAKS night at Pine Ridge Elementary.  The evening began with a spaghetti supper and fun drawings for prizes, including No Homework coupons, No Shoes Day passes and Lunch with the Principal certificates.  Dr. Sewell shared with parents her pride in Pine Ridge’s 2007 Exemplary Rating, and visited with them about the state’s TAKS expectations for third graders.

Next, third graders escorted their parents to their classrooms, where teachers presented special information about TAKS.  Teachers began by outlining the TAKS objectives for Reading and Math.  Then parents had the chance to be kids again as they answered TAKS format questions (with a little help from their own children!).

At the end of the evening, two lucky students won remote control cars, and winning parents were awarded gift cards.  Parents also left with booklets full of hints for helping students prepare for next spring’s TAKS.  All participants enjoyed the chance to celebrate the special partnership between home and school.

Christmas Bread Wreath
Cooking with the LISD family! - December 5, 2007

Click Here to print this recipe...and cook it for your co-workers, family, or Communications Office!

Ingredients

1/4 cup freshly shredded Parmesan cheese
1 loaf (1 pound) frozen white or whole wheat bread dough, thawed
1 tablespoon olive or vegetable oil
1 small garlic clove, finely chopped

Instructions
1. Grease cookie sheet. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of the cheese onto flat surface. Roll bread dough in cheese into 24-inch rope. Place on cookie sheet, forming circle; pinch ends to seal.
2. Snip dough 16 times from the outer edge of the circle at about 1 1/2-inch intervals, cutting two-thirds of the way through, using kitchen scissors. Lift and turn every other section of dough toward the center of the circle pinching ends, so the dough resembles branches if desired.
3. Cover and let rise in warm place 1 to 2 hours or until double. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)
4. Heat oven to 350ºF. Mix oil and garlic; brush over dough. Sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons cheese. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.
