Outdoor Education - Compass/Orienteering
Submitted by Physical Education Classes, Livingston Junior High School
Livingston Junior High School - During week four of their Outdoor Education unit, the LJH girls PE classes learned the basic skills for reading a compass. The students learned the directions North, South, East, and West. Learned that North is always 0 degrees. East is 90. South 180. And West 270. They also learned that the sun comes up in the East and sets in the West. Students learned that moss grows on the North side of a tree and the class ventured outside and learned that this was true!
Marine Sgt. Johns and PFC Smith visited the classes on Tuesday and talked about reading a compass and chart. Sgt. Johns talked about the earth’s magnetic field and how a compass works. Explained the difference between true North, grid North, and compass North. If ever in the southern hemisphere, the compass will point North, but it will actually be South and, if on the equator, the compass will spin like a top!
On Thursday, the students were given objects in the gym to determine their location by direction/degrees.
On Friday, the students were able to apply their skills/knowledge learned. Each group was given a compass and instructions to their first checkpoint. The groups had to read and reread their compass and line up the compass sight with a fixed object before stepping. The groups had to complete nine checkpoints. At each checkpoint, directions and steps were given to the next destination. Most groups were able to successfully complete their tour.

Great Behavior in the Classroom - February 12, 2008
Livingston High School
I want to recognize Kamri West as my star student this week not only because she is hard working and conscientious about her work, but also, because she is willing to help her classmates. This week while seniors were working on research Kamri helped her classmates in completing their works cited pages. She did quiet well teaching them that I encouraged her to become a teacher!
