Thanks for Making UILions Great!
Submitted by: Deana Evans, Livingston High School
Livingston High School - Livingston High School was the site of the 17th Annual UILions Academic Meet on Saturday, Feb. 9th. This year we had over 1200 entries and 35 different schools attending. An undertaking of this magnitude takes a huge number of volunteers and the support of the entire community. I would like to personally and publicly thank the First Baptist Church congregation for supplying the breakfast in our hospitality room. Our visitors (coaches, bus drivers and judges) arrive after leaving their homes as early as 5:00 AM so the generous breakfast they receive helps start the day on a positive note.
The hospitality room team led by Kathleen McKenzie and staffed by Dawn Jander and Pattie Myers is one of the reasons that schools return to the UILions Meet year after year. The delicious meal created by Tina Glover and her helpers in the cafeteria is always a hit, especially this year with chicken and dumplings.
The LHS UIL coaches and their volunteers also did a great job of running the competitions. Imagine the organization and manpower that is required to test 120 science students at the same time! Reading and grading the 20 different competitions takes hours of strenuous work and our LISD family and community members rose to the occasion especially in the Journalism and Ready Writing contests. Sandy Gilbert and her long list of speaking judges continue to do a great job year after year .
Feeding the 800 students all day long is no easy task either, and Bette Smith with her concession stand team of Steve Kirk, Dr. Darrell Myers, Corky Evans, Richard Scoggin, Mickey Gilbert, Stacy & Stephanie Glover, and student volunteers, always make the job look easy.
You've heard the old saying, "It takes a village to raise a child", well it takes a wonderful and supportive community to host an Academic Meet of this size. As UIL Coordinator, I want to thank EVERYONE that had a hand in this year's Meet, from the Superintendent of Schools, the LISD Administrative Team, the High School Principal, the Asst. Principal, the LHS UIL coaches and teachers, our wonderful custodians, the LISD staff volunteers from other campuses, the community volunteers to the student volunteers and our friends from other school districts that volunteer out of the sheer goodness of their hearts.
This year's UILions Meet will go down in school history as one of our best. The money earned (it should be close to $10,000!) goes to the G&W Scholarship fund earmarked for this year's seniors that participate in UIL activities. I am proud to be a member of a community that cares, that supports its youth and that believes in serving others. Thank you Livingston!
Sign Service
Submitted by: Brenda Black, Livingston High School
Livingston High School - One of the duties for the LHS Student Council this year is maintaining the information sign at the entrance of the school. All information that the school or organizations want posted on the sign is given to Mrs. Black, the advisor, and she sends a crew of council members to change the sign. The main sign crew this year have been Chris Arredondo, Duane Underferth, Jordan Loftin, Josh Baugh, Christina Koen, and Cassie Cousatte.
