Submitted by Marie Holder, Pine Ridge Elementary
Pine Ridge Elementary - Pine Ridge Elementary School is proud to announce our PAL winners for January. These students were chosen to be recipients of the “Principals’ Award for Leadership”, a monthly recognition based on leadership skills, citizenship, manners, kindness, responsibility, and making good choices. Kindergarten PALS spent an afternoon with the principal and assistant principal enjoying a special book, along with a snack. First through third grade PALS were treated to lunch with Dr. Sewell and Mrs. Holder. What a treat for the principals to spend time with students who demonstrate good decision making! Our Favorite Apple
Submitted by: Adrianne Murphy, Timber Creek Elementary
First grade at TCE enjoyed learning about Johnny Appleseed's tale. The theme ended with the questioning of which apple tree they would choose to be planted in their yard. The students tasted three different kinds of apples, and then made a graph and wrote a story about why they chose that certain apple.

LJH FCCLA WINS at Regional Competition!
Submitted by Sally Carlton, LJH FCCLA, Livingston Junior High School
Livingston Junior High School - Livingston Junior High FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) traveled to Galveston for Regional Competition last weekend. Ashley Gates, Becky Bailey, and Jenel Wood competed in the event Focus on the Children with the project title, "Kids Connecting with Kids." Ryan Lonergan, Derek Martindale, and Sarah Fisher competed in the event Chapter Service Projects with the Project title, "F.A.I.T.H, Families and Individuals Thanking Heroes." These LJH FCCLA members planned projects, created visuals, wrote 10-minute speeches, presented their projects before judges, and answered the judge's questions. Both teams were victorious! They both won first place in their events and are State Qualifiers.
While attending the Region IV FCCLA conference these students attended meetings. They went to a leadership session where they learned about different community service projects that they could bring back to LJH.
They also attended a leadership session with the national motivational youth speaker, Heather Schultz. She spoke about leadership, positive choices, anti-bullying, and encouraged the students to be a solution, not a problem, in our world.

New Students in Mrs. Prather's Class
Submitted by: Janie Prather, Livingston High School
Livingston High School - Since January 18, 2008 Mrs. Prather has acquired 100 new and very active students in her classroom. The good news is that they do not take up much room and they are very well behaved. These new additions are 100 MEAL WORMS! As part of a Science unit on bugs, worms and insects students are raising 100 meal worms and watching them go from larvae, to pupa, to adult beetles. Soon the adult beetles will lay eggs and the life cycle will begin again! The worms are living in an aquarium in a bed of whole wheat flour and bran. Students feed them potatoes, apples, and lettuce leaves. Every week we measure the beetles and note the changes they have made. We also had meal worm races to see whose worm was the fastest. Students have learned a lot about metamorphosis and many other new vocabulary words.

Great Behavior in the Classroom - February 25, 2008
Livingston High School
Edgar Pecero is my star student because he stepped up and did the right thing by stopping an altercation between three students. Edgar stepped in and broke up the fight without regards to his safety or reputation. He did his best in trying to talk to all of the people involved trying to calm the situation. It takes integrity to stand up for what is right and Edgar has shown this integrity.
