Outdoor Recreation - Fishing
Submitted by Livingston Junior High P.E. Teachers
Livingston Junior High School - The Physical Education students at Livingston Junior High have started an angler education unit with help from Texas Parks and Wildlife. The students are encouraged to spend more time outdoors and learn lifelong recreational activities.
Each student was given an ID (identification) card for saltwater and freshwater fish. The students have learned the proper way to handle/release fish and they have also studied fish habitat. All students have been able to practice casting with spincast reels loaned to us by Texas Parks and Wildlife.
LJH Counselor, Mr. Prather, came by and taught the class how to use a fly reel. Students were also exposed to a spinning reel and cane pole. The students have been shown how to tie a palomar knot and a clinch knot so that they are able to attach hooks to their line. The girls spent another day casting and actually “catching” plastic fish. Those anglers that reeled in a fish were awarded a squiggle worm for their next fishing adventure!

LJH Students Sweep History Day Competition
Submitted by Jennifer Dunson, Livingston Junior High
Livingston Junior High School - On Friday, February 22, Livingston Junior High GT students competed in the National History Day regional competition hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s history department. This was the 3rd year Livingston has competed in National History Day and the saying “Third time’s the charm” certainly held true. There were three schools competing in eight event categories, and Livingston Junior High students were awarded the top places in every event. First and second place winners will advance to the state competition in Austin where winners from all 23 regional competitions will compete again for top honors. LJH had 25 students and 16 projects qualify to attend the state competition.
This year’s competition theme is “Conflict and Compromise”. 7th grade students AD Glover, Daniel Munson, Annie Robison, and Louisa Santoyo were awarded the “Best of East Texas” for the best project on an East Texas topic. These students presented their exhibit entitled “The Lake that Changed East Texas”. They explained the conflicts that Polk County faced when establishing Lake Livingston. “Best of Show” honors were awarded to Mackenzie Gaylord for her exhibit on the Galveston Hurricane and Dana Smith for her website on Japanese Internment Camps during World War II. These students, along with the Best of Show winners from all of the other regionals, will be honored at the awards ceremony in Austin. Click Here for the Complete List of Winners!

New Students in Mrs. Prather's Class
Submitted by: Janie Prather, Livingston High School
Livingston High School - Since January 18, 2008 Mrs. Prather has acquired 100 new and very active students in her classroom. The good news is that they do not take up much room and they are very well behaved. These new additions are 100 MEAL WORMS! As part of a Science unit on bugs, worms and insects students are raising 100 meal worms and watching them go from larvae, to pupa, to adult beetles. Soon the adult beetles will lay eggs and the life cycle will begin again! The worms are living in an aquarium in a bed of whole wheat flour and bran. Students feed them potatoes, apples, and lettuce leaves. Every week we measure the beetles and note the changes they have made. We also had meal worm races to see whose worm was the fastest. Students have learned a lot about metamorphosis and many other new vocabulary words.

Hudson (Game 16 record 9-7-0 district 5-5)
The Livingston Lady Lions were able to add another district win to their record with a victorious win over the Hudson Lady Hornets. Hudson came out the strongest at the beginning scoring a goal within the first two minutes of play. This however would be the only goal scored by Hudson the entire game. Breanna Shuler was able to tack on three goals the first half and Shawna Hoover had a phenomenal goal to put the Lady Lions at a 4 to 1 lead. Hannah Rudebusch added one more powerful goal to put the Lady Lions at a safe lead. The defense was held strong again by Britney Ingle. Deya Trevino was taken out early due to injury which allowed for Lacy Cuesta to step in and do a great defensive job. The Lady Lions’ final score was 5-1.

The Nacogdoches Lady Dragons traveled to Livingston to start the second round of district play for the Lady Lions. The lady lions having just come off of a bye week on Friday had a slow start allowing the Lady dragons to score their first goal in the first two minutes of the game. Livingston held Nacogdoches to a two goal deficit in the first half, playing very well together. The second half of the game the Lady Dragons came out stronger than the first half and again scored within the first 2 minutes. There was a great defensive effort put forth by Shawna Hoover and Lacy Cuesta. These two ladies fought until the last seconds of the game. Livingston fell 0-7.
