TAKS Math Night
Submitted by Gay Jeffries, Timber Creek Elementary
Timber Creek Elementary - Math Night at Timber Creek Elementary was a huge success! Students, Pre-K – 2nd grades brought their families and assembled in the gym. Mrs. Vinson welcomed over 600 guests. The students and their families played games that included a sea shell number game where they got to dig in the sand and assemble numbers, spill the beans, addition tic tac toe, skip counting with lima beans and even measured their fingers to find out who had the longest one as well as many other fun games. After rotating through the games families then were invited to the cafeteria where they were served pizza, cookies and their choice of drinks. We appreciate the hard work of our teachers and staff who manned the games, served refreshments and the custodial staff who cleaned up the remains after everyone went home. It was a wonderful evening.

Submitted by: Adrianne Murphy, Timber Creek Elementary
Timber Creek Elementary - First grader's at TCE had a special visitor from the LVFD. He spoke with the students about fire safety and the special equipment that the fire fighters use during a fire. The students were amazed with the gear the firemen wear but they are now aware of who to look for in case they ever experience a house fire. TCE 1st grade would like to thank Mr. Josh and Mr. Tres for setting up the visit!

LIS Leadership Team Learns About F.A.I.T.H.
(Family And Individuals Thanking Heroes)
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston Intermediate School
Livingston Intermediate - The LIS Leadership Team enjoyed having Mrs. Bea Ellis come and speak to them about the FAITH Military Support Group on Monday, February 25, 2008. She shared several letters of thanks sent to FAITH from servicemen that received their care packages as well as stories about her son’s time spent fighting in the Middle East. Mrs. Ellis gave the students ideas as to ways they could help support our troops. The students discussed the project and decided to collect chap stick (with sunscreen), baby wipes/wet-ones and liquid hand sanitizer. Students teamed together to make posters to display around the school and are working on fliers to send home with all the students at the Intermediate school to get everyone involved. They also plan on decorating cans for each classroom for students to drop their spare change in to donate to help with the cost of mailing the care packages.
Mrs. Ellis also told the team that the soldiers truly enjoy the letters they receive from home. The care packages are the only correspondence many of our soldiers receive so the LIS Leadership Team is asking all LIS students and staff to write letters to enclose in the packages letting the soldiers know how much we care and appreciate the sacrifices they are making for us.
The Livingston Intermediate School Leadership Team would like to thank Mrs. Bea Ellis for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit with us and for all the work she does along with the FAITH group to support our troops.

Writing Workshops and More at LIS
Submitted by Michelle Casas, Livingston Intermediate School
Livingston Intermediate - February 19th was a BIG day for the fourth grade writing team at LIS! Almost 150 team members participated in two writing workshops and all of them are getting ready to SCORE on the TAKS writing test.
Mr. Dean Boyd, TCE Librarian and former fourth grade writing teacher, worked with about 60 writers at the “Writers’ Express” Workshop in the library. These students learned new ways to elaborate their compositions and how to tie their stories together with an Object Placement Timeline.
Another 85 fourth grade writers met with Mrs. Christy Cross to find out what she does each day as Principal of LIS. Afterward, these students traveled in teams of 12 to the classrooms of six different Language Arts teachers to complete one step of the writing process with each teacher. They then returned to their own Language Arts teachers to complete compositions about what they would do if they were chosen to be “Principal for a Day”. After the all-day workshop, names of students who worked hard and cooperated with all teachers were placed in a drawing. Two students were chosen to be Principal and two others to be Asst. Principal for a day.

Sushi Superb!
Submitted by Jennifer Dunson, Livingston Junior High School
Livingston Junior High School - In Mrs. Dunson's World Cultures class, students were discussing how the popularity of sushi in the West has led to overfishing in the oceans off the coast of Japan. During the conversation, one of the students volunteered that her mother knew how to prepare and roll authentic Japanese sushi.
Students were able to sample several different types of sushi, along with both wasabi and soy sauces. Although some were a little turned off by the seaweed, everyone agreed that it was not as "strange" as they expected and several students actually had second and third helpings! A big thank you to Mabel Smith, mother of Dana Smith, for allowing us this wonderful
opportunity.

Corey Dickerson Recognized for Volunteer Service
Submitted by: Sandy Gilbert, Livingston ISD
Livingston High School - Livingston, TX – Corey Dickerson, 18, of Livingston has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Corey participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of Relay for Life in Livingston, where he is a volunteer.
 |
The administration, faculty and staff at Livingston High School are proud of Corey for all he has accomplished. He continues to be a role model for our students and we look forward to hearing of his future successes.
Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. Nearly 250,000 young people across America have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.
|
“The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said Arthur F. Ryan, chairman of Prudential Financial. “They truly deserve all of the praise and encouragement we can give them.”
“The young people recognized by the Spirit of Community Awards demonstrate an enormous capacity for giving and reaching out to those in need,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director of the National Association of Secondary Principals. “NASSP is proud to honor them as they are wonderful examples of the high caliber of young people in our nation’s schools today.”
Program applications were distributed last September through all public and private middle level and high schools,
Girl Scout councils, county 4-H organizations, American Red Cross chapters, YMCAs, and Volunteer Centers. After Local Honorees were named, state-level judges selected State Honorees, Distinguished Finalists and Certificate of Excellence recipients. Volunteer activities were judged on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact, and personal growth.
NASSP, based in Reston, Va., is the preeminent leadership organization representing the nation’s middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and aspiring principals. Prudential Financial, based in Newark, N.J., serves individual and institutional customers worldwide, offering a variety of products and services in the areas of insurance, investments, securities, banking and real estate.
