Livingston Junior High - LJH students are ready to "Slam Dunk the TAKS" as their school and faculty have been transformed into a world of basketball highlights. On Monday, members of the faculty donned referee uniforms to inspire students as they prepare for Wednesday's big tests. The students were also visited by former Harlem Globetrotter Melvin Adams. The students and faculty have worked very hard this year to do their very best on this first round of testing and are excited that Wednesday will be a big day for their campus. Good luck LJH!

Timber Creek Elementary -
TCE is ready for the 2008 TAKS Reading test and held a pep rally on Tuesday to inspire the troops as they get ready to "Attack the TAKS". Members of the Livingston High School ROTC were on hand to inspire the students as was Coach Randy Rowe. Each third grade class also had prepared a chant to perform for the Pep Rally and Kathy Stark lead the students in a song. Rumor has it that principal Karen Vinson and Assistant Principal Kyle Rice have pledged to spend 24 hours on the TCE roof if 95% of the students pass the Reading test on the first attempt! Go Timber Creek!

Globetrotter Visits Livingston Intermediate
Submitted by Michelle Casas, Livingston Intermediate School
Livingston Intermediate - Anxiously waiting for their surprise, the students from Livingston Intermediate filed into the gym. Students tried to guess what the surprise could be. Some asked “Is it the President?” Another asked, “Can we eat it?” The teachers with smiles on their faces told the students they would have to wait and see. They didn’t have to wait long. Mrs. Cross introduced Melvin Adams from Houston, Texas to the students. Melvin played college basketball at San Jose College in San Jose, California. While there, he was a two-time All-American. He led the nation in scoring 28 points per game his junior year. Melvin Adams has played professional basketball in New Zealand, Europe, and for the San Antonio Spurs. He also played three seasons with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Melvin Adams has appeared on television as well, including appearances on Sister Sister, HBO Comedy, The Oprah Winfrey Show, BET, MTV Cribs, and in the movie Little Nicky with Adam Sandler.

On Monday, Melvin Adams spoke with the fourth and fifth graders about how important it is to have good character.  He told the students about his childhood, and how he persevered in spite of various trials. He expressed to the students how important it is to believe in one’s self. The students showed a great deal of enthusiasm for the presentation and what the guest speaker had to say. He called on several volunteers to help him with his demonstrations and helped get students fired up for Wednesday's TAKS tests.

Firing it Up for TAKS!
Submitted by Brenda Black and Lorene Overall, Livingston High School
Livingston High School – It is coming….. The high school English department and their students have been “Firing it up for TAKS.”  Today, Mrs. Black and Mrs. Overall are taking their junior classes up the hill behind the portables to a campsite where we have a firepit set up.  The students are writing down their fears or concerns about the test and then dropping them into the fire.  We have been working all week going over strategies and skills and putting them into a brew pot along with testing buddies. After a feast of s’mores, each teacher is giving their students testing incentives: Mrs. Overall is giving her students pencils and testing buddies, and Mrs. Black is giving her students star student pencils and star student suckers. This activity is a culmination of all the hard work the students have accomplished preparing them for the TAKS test. Mrs. Black and Mrs. Overall wanted to reward the students for their hard work as well as bond with them to let them know that they care and are with them as they take the test.

LHS Recognized for Yearbook Excellence
Submitted by Marci Dickens, Livingston High School
Livingston High School – The Livingston High School yearbook staff has been recognized by Taylor Publishing with an Award of Excellence honoring its accomplishments in yearbook design and coverage.  The Livingston High School yearbook is featured in the 2008 Yearbook Yearbook.  Judges selected the Livingston High School yearbook a month the best.  The yearbook adviser is Marci Dickens.

“The 2008 Yearbook Yearbook marks the 22nd edition.  It’s the biggest – more schools are featured than ever before.  It’s the best – Taylor customers are setting the bar for scholastic journalism.  The competition gets tougher year after year.  Taylor staffs are doing an outstanding job of creating great, student-oriented yearbooks,” editor Marilyn Scoggins said.  “Taylor Publishing proudly includes the best of the best in Yearbook Yearbook.  Advisers and journalists across the nations peruse the pages for theme concepts, page designs as well as cover and photo ideas.”

Yearbooks published by Taylor for the 2007 school year were evaluated in one or more of the following areas:  cover design, theme development, layout design and photography.  Taylor Publishing recognizes only the top five percent of yearbook staffs for outstanding yearbook achievement.

“The Award of Excellence is given each year to a small percentage of yearbook staffs nationwide that demonstrate excellence in yearbook,” marketing manager Mike Taylor said.  “We applaud these staffs for their outstanding work and support their efforts in scholastic journalism.”

Taylor Publishing, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, also operates a facility in El Paso.  Taylor is a major publisher of yearbooks nationwide and the industry’s technology leader in digital innovation.  Taylor provides training, technical support and printing services to elementary school, middle school, high school and college yearbook staffs.

Palestine ( Game 18 Record 9-9-0 District 5-7)
The Livingston Lady Lions’ playoff hopes were relinquished with a difficult loss to Palestine. Livingston went the entire game without being able to penetrate Palestine’s defense to score a goal. There was only one strong shot taken and it came from Breanna Shuler.

Center (Game 19 Record 10-9-0 District 6-7)
Center travel to Livingston on March 3rd for a second round district match. The Lady Lions came out strong scoring the first goal. At the half the score was 2-0 in Livingston’s favor. Most of the first half Center was unable to pass midfield due to the outstanding defensive effort put forth. The Lady Lions were allowed due to their lead to try new positions and strengthen their team communication. The score at the end of the game was still 2-0 with Rachel Blau and Stephanie Pace scoring these two goals.
