"Congratulations on a great accomplishment for Livingston FFA by winning the Grand Champion Project in the HLSR Agriculture Mechanics Contest," said LISD Superintendent Darrell Myers. Happy Birthday Dr. Suess!
Submitted by Sue (Suess) Ann McQueen, Livingston High School
Pine Ridge Elementary - Happy Birthday Dr. Suess! Green eggs and ham were served to Pine Ridge Elementary First Graders in celebration of Dr. Suess' birthday. Although some students were not too sure about it, most students enjoyed the interesting meal and a few were a little more reluctant, just like the character in the book. Students participated in various activities throughout the day such as reading books by Dr. Suess, making colorful hats, taking a Dr. Suess Accelerated Reading test, completing Readasaurus slips, and solving Suessical math scenarios.

Attack the TAKS
Submitted by Everlou Marsh, Timber Creek Elementary
Photos by Joyce Dryman, LISD Communications
Timber Creek Elementary - TCE is ready for the 2008 TAKS Reading test and held a pep rally on Tuesday to inspire the troops as they get ready to "Attack the TAKS". Members of the Livingston High School ROTC were on hand to inspire the students as was Coach Randy Rowe. Each third grade class also had prepared a chant to perform for the Pep Rally and Kathy Stark lead the students in a song. Rumor has it that principal Karen Vinson and Assistant Principal Kyle Rice have pledged to spend 24 hours on the TCE roof if 95% of the students pass the Reading test on the first attempt! Go Timber Creek!

Outdoor Recreation - Junior Anglers
Submitted by Livingston Junior High P.E. Teachers
Livingston Junior High School - The PE students at LJH have completed an angler education unit with help from Texas Parks and Wildlife. The students are encouraged to spend more time outdoors and learn lifelong recreational activities. Each student was given an ID (identification) card for saltwater and freshwater fish. The students have learned the proper way to handle/release fish and they have also studied fish habitat. All students have been able to practice casting with spincast reels loaned to us by Texas Parks and Wildlife. LJH Counselor, Mr. Prather, came by and taught the class how to use a fly reel. Students were also exposed to a spinning reel and cane pole. The students have been shown how to tie a palomar knot and a clinch knot so that they are able to attach hooks to their line. The girls spent another day casting and actually “catching” plastic fish. Those anglers that reeled in a fish were awarded a squiggle worm for their next fishing adventure!
In the second week of angler education, the students learned how to measure a fish. Students learned that a person has to be 17+ in order to obtain a fishing license in Texas. On the first Saturday in June, anyone can fish across the state without a license. Also, a license is not required when fishing in any Texas state park. The students have also learned that the “Outdoor Annual” contains hunting and fishing regulations.
Mr. Prather returned and demonstrated some fly casting techniques. He also tied several interesting “flies” for the classes.
At the conclusion of angler education, the students were awarded TPWD Basic Fishing certificates and TPWD fish pins. Each student also received a squiggly worm. In addition to the awards, Wal-Mart donated some fishing equipment to give to the students. We gave away Zebco and Shakespeare spincasts, tackle boxes, bait buckets, tackle, stringers, gloves, sinkers, and bobbers. Apparently, our local Wal-Mart manager, Charles Hall, is a huge fishing fan.
Now that the girls are certified junior anglers, they’re ready to go fishing! They can tie knots, assemble basic tackle, cast safely, identify some fish and lures, and discuss safety rules and regulations.
