School Project Comes to an End
Submitted by Deana Evans, Livingston High School
A little part of Marion County, Kentucky history has been found in an unlikely place, Livingston, Texas. Livingston Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Darrell Myers and his wife Pattie came across an old, worn, leather-bound family Bible several years ago in Lafayette, LA. They have taken special care of the book through three moves and even brought it with them when they evacuated for Hurricane Rita. The bible was overflowing with historic newspaper clippings, obituaries, and other bits of daily life from over one hundred years ago. It has been the dream of the Myers family to have a group of students study the handwritten notes inside, piece together the clues contained there and trace the family tree to a living descendent so they could return it to its rightful owners. Livingston High School students in the Gifted and Talented Independent Study class have done just that with the help of local genealogists, Gladys and Clifford May. They will be giving the historic treasure ironically to a Houston resident, John Douglas Polk, on Tuesday, Nov. 13th at Livingston High School.
The earliest clipping contained in the Bible dates back to February 1901, and it is possible that the many small, handwritten notes in the book date back even further. Among the events clipped and placed between the pages of the Bible are a performance program from a traveling violinist named Joseph Heine, a local property auction involving a tract of land and an interesting article about the disappearance of the buffalos. Several photographs and obituaries gave the students a starting place to track the Kentucky family through the years to other states including Florida and Texas. US Census information and another genealogist from Connecticut have been instrumental in the process of tracing the family tree of the original owner.
This project has made history come to life for the students involved. They feel a kinship to the family that they have followed through the years and the excitement of helping solve the historic puzzle is something they will remember forever. Everyone is looking forward to meeting a descendent of the family and to the satisfaction that goes along with knowing that precious family memories have been preserved and returned from the past to their rightful owners.
