Calculus Students become graphing calculators!
Submitted by Laura Ouedraogo, Livingston High School

Calculus students are becoming the graphing calculator by predicting the graph of complex functions themselves by using first and second derivatives to determine critical points of the functions. Students are investigating concavity, critical and inflection points to help them be smarter than the calculator! We wave the magic wand and our graph is just like the graphing calculators!

Submitted by Sandra Gilbert, Livingston High School

The LHS Counselors' will host a presentation sponsored by Bank of America on Monday, November 5, 2007 in the high school library from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The presentation is called "Making College Financial Planning Count" and is free of charge. During this one hour program, college financing will be discussed, including; how to plan for and manage costs, public vs. private colleges and universities - the affordability myth, types of financial aid that are available, options your family has in developing a college funding strategy, how colleges and universities look at divorced households, how to send your child to college without risking you family's financial future and much more! All high school students and their parents are invited, but it will be of special interest to seniors and their parents.

Trunk or Treat is a Big Success!
Submitted by David Powell, Livingston High School Band

The LHS Royal Brigade held their Annual Halloween Trunk or Treat activity Tuesday October 30 at the First United Methodist Church parking lot. Children came out in costumes and visited the numerous stations manned by costumed band students to gather treats. Started in 2000, Trunk or Treat is a chance for the band to give something back to the community by providing a safe and controlled trick or treat experience to the children of Livingston.  “We just want to give something back”, director David Powell said.

“Because we get so much support from our community, we want to do something to give some back.” This year, in a short two hour period, more than 200 children came through the parking area to trick or treat. Many parents comment on the positive atmosphere, thanking the band for providing this opportunity for their children to go trick-or-treating without going door-to-door. The Royal Brigade plans to continue this activity for years to come.

Dana Smith wins “Award of Excellence”
Submitted by Marie Holder, Pine Ridge Elementary

Dana Smith, a sixth grader at Livingston Junior High School, was recently honored by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Commission on the Arts for her excellence in art.  Dana, as a fifth grade Gifted and Talented student, was one of more than 700 students from across the state of Texas who submitted a piece of art in the Texas Landscapes and Celebrations Art Contest.  A panel of judges met in Austin over the summer to select the best of the work to win the “Award of Excellence” and to be included in an exhibit that will open in Austin on December 3, 2007 and stay open until February 8, 2008.

The art pieces will move through three different buildings during the tour, including the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Legislative Budget Board.  Dana’s art, along with the other winners, will also be on display later this year at www.arts.state.tx.us/perceptions/ .  Dana is a talented artist who has won many awards during her years in Livingston ISD.

Cards, factors, and Prime Numbers
Submitted by Michelle Moore, Livingston Intermediate School

5th grade students in Mrs. Moore's math class did a wonderful job in class "playing cards." Each student received a deck of cards (took out 10s, face cards, and jokers) and turned over the first four cards. They added those cards together to get a sum. They wrote their sum down and listed all the factors for their sum.

Once they had all their factors listed they circled all the prime numbers for that sum. Upon completion students had to explain in their math journal how they determined or tested that they had listed all the factors for their sum and what numbers were prime numbers. Great job students - you make me proud!

7th Grade Science Studies Alternative Energy Sources
Submitted by Beth Baker, Livingston Junior High School

Mrs. Baker's 7th grade science classes have been studying alternative sources of energy. During that time, students created their own designs for a solar oven and a water wheel. On Wednesday, October 31st, all of the students got to go outside and try them out. Much to their surprise, both their solar ovens and water wheels were successful! The students really enjoyed being able to use their own creativity and knowledge to make their projects unique.
