2nd graders send Hope from Home
Submitted by Kim Munson, Timber Creek Elementary
The 2nd graders at TCE spent a few days learning about U.S. Veterans and Veterans Day. During this unit, the 2nd graders also brought donations for the F.A.I.T.H. (Families and Individuals Thanking Heroes) program. Among the donations were items such as Christmas cards, baby wipes, gum, paper and pens, and trial size shampoos and soaps. In addition to the donations, the students wrote friendly letters to be mailed to active military serving our country.
Quotes from the friendly letters include: “Thank you for fighting for our freedom and for justice.”, “Thank you for spending time away from your family to help my family.”, “Thank you for putting your life on the line for us!”, and “ You are my hero-thank you!”. The students did a great job with their letters. The 2nd graders are excited to know that their letters and donations will put a smile on the face of many that are serving.

LISD Honors Hal and Peggy Haley
Submitted by Gregg Faith, Livingston ISD
During the September meeting of the Livingston ISD Board of Trustees, the board voted to officially name the section of the Lion Stadium press box used for broadcasting the Hal and Peggy Haley Box. Livingston ISD is honoring Mr. And Mrs. Haley for the over 50 years of dedication to broadcasting and supporting LISD sports and programs. From the stations beginnings in 1957, Hal and Peggy Haley broadcast football games and other sporting events and were strong advocates for the success of our local students. Their legacy continues and the work of Radio Station KETX continues to broadcast and support the hard work of our kids.
At halftime of Friday night’s football game between the Livingston Lions and the Waller Bulldogs, we will officially unveil a plaque honoring these two broadcasters and forever remembering them in the Lion Stadium press box. |

College Students for the Day
Submitted by Deana Evans, Livingston High School
“Howdy” was certainly the word of the day when the GT students (Grades 9-12) from Livingston High School visited the campus of Texas A&M University on Nov. 7. These students felt like college students for the day as they visited the REC Center, met with an admissions counselor, ate lunch at Sbisa cafeteria, took a walking tour of central campus, visited the library, peeped inside a classroom, toured three different dorms and shopped at the MSC bookstore.
Students were fascinated by the many traditions of Texas A&M. The tour guide explained to them why they were not allowed to walk on the grass around the Memorial Student Center and why they should take their hat off (“uncover”) as they entered the building. They couldn’t believe that students actually left money at the foot of the Sul Ross statue (for good luck before exams) and learned all about the Aggie Code of Honor as the money was left untouched by their fellow students.
The group was allowed to enter Kyle Field and the tour guide (along with several LHS student helpers) taught the group their first Aggie yell. The sheer size and magnitude of the massive stadium and the Aggie Vision screen was amazing from ground level. The 12th Man tradition was explained and the students saw first-hand how dedicated the students are to their team because the whole plaza in front of the stadium was full of tents as students have already started camping out for the opportunity to get good tickets to the Texas A&M vs. tu (University of Texas) game, the day after Thanksgiving.
“I have a feeling they are missing the LHS group on campus today… we will probably be known as the ‘friendly’ group for many days to come” said teacher, Deana Evans with a smile. At least one person in the LHS group (and most of the time a LOT more than that) said “Howdy!” to every single person that passed.
Former LHS graduates and current A&M students, Veronica Stark, Blake Vestal, Matt Jones and Meagan Murphy met up with the group at different times during the day. All in all it was a great day and the students learned a lot about college life and what they need to do in high school to be ready for college one day.

LISD Star Students
Great Behavior in the Classroom - November 9, 2007
Livingston Junior High
Brandon Pearson transferred into the Pre-AP class at the end of the 1st Six Weeks. Although the class was 10 lessons ahead of Brandon's previous class, he worked hard over the weekend to get caught up on missed lessons and also keep up with his current ones. Great job needs to be said to a great math student.

cup butter or margarine |
| 3 |
medium celery stalks, chopped (1 1/2 cups) |
| 3/4 |
cup chopped onion |
| 9 |
cups 1/2-inch cubes cornbread or soft bread |
| 1 1/2 |
teaspoons chopped fresh or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage leaves, crumbled |
| 1 1/2 |
teaspoons chopped fresh or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves |
| 1 |
teaspoon salt |
| 1/8 |
teaspoon pepper |
Turkey
| 1 |
whole turkey (12 lb), thawed if frozen |
| 1 |
tablespoon chopped fresh or 2 teaspoons dried rosemary leaves, crumbled |
| 1 |
tablespoon chopped fresh or 2 teaspoons dried sage leaves, crumbled |
| 1 |
teaspoon salt |
| 1/4 |
teaspoon pepper |
| 2 |
cloves garlic, finely chopped |
| 1/4 |
cup butter or margarine, melted |
Instructions
| 1. |
Heat oven to 325°F. In 10-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Cook celery and onion in butter about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until crisp-tender; remove from heat. In large bowl, mix celery mixture and remaining stuffing ingredients until well blended. |
| 2. |
Stuff turkey just before roasting, not ahead of time. Fill wishbone area lightly with stuffing. Fasten neck skin to back with skewer. Fold wings across back with tips touching. Fill body cavity lightly. (Do not pack--stuffing will expand while cooking.) Tuck drumsticks under band of skin at tail, or tie together with heavy string, then tie to tail. |
| 3. |
In small bowl, mix rosemary, 1 tablespoon sage, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon pepper and the garlic; rub into turkey skin. Place turkey, breast side up, on rack in shallow roasting pan. Brush with 1/4 cup butter. Do not add water. Place meat thermometer in thickest part of inside thigh muscle so thermometer does not touch bone. |
| 4. |
Roast uncovered 4 to 5 hours, brushing with pan juices every 30 minutes, until thermometer reads 180°F and juice of turkey is no longer pink when center of thigh is cut. Thermometer placed in center of stuffing will read 165°F when done. |
| 5. |
Place foil loosely over turkey when it begins to turns golden. When turkey is two-thirds done, cut band of skin, or remove string or skewer holding legs. When turkey is done, place on warm platter and cover with foil to keep warm. Let stand about 20 minutes for easiest carving. While turkey is standing, prepare Foolproof Gravy if desired. |
| 6. |
To serve, garnish turkey with fresh herb sprigs, if desired. |
