Submitted by Destiny Kennedy, Pine Ridge Elementary School, November 17, 2008

PRE - Pine Ridge celebrated Veteran's Day by inviting members of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary to our school. The children performed patriotic songs and taught the guest how to play "Battleship". The children also made cards, pictures, poster and wrote letters for the Ladies Auxiliary to pass out to the VA Hospital patients and for decorations at the VFW Hall. The Veteran's taught the children proper flag etiquette for parades, sporting events and ceremonies. They also taught the kids about the Buddy Poppy. The Ladies and Veteran's were able to give each child some mementos help them learn about the flag.

Tips for Family Fitness Fun
Submitted by Nikki Wilson, Livingston ISD Health and Wellness Committee, November 17, 2008

Everyone knows that it is important to turn off the TV, DVD, Gameboys etc. in order to prevent the development of childhood obesity. But without their *screens* available, many children complain that they are bored. With this in mind, Shape Up America! and Sweet *N Low have partnered on a set of ideas for parents to use to help children become more active and live a healthier lifestyle.

Lists of tips are available at

Balancing Balloons Made Easy
Submitted by Lana Smith, Livingston Intermediate School, November 17, 2008

LIS - LIS staff members learned that balancing balloons is easier when it is a team effort. With the many tasks that teachers have to accomplish during the school day, it is easy to forget that you have a "team" to help you out. Staff members were given varied numbers of balloons and were asked to keep their balloons in the air until they needed help to do so. In order to receive help, they had to call out a name of someone on the sidelines and ask them to help balance the balloons. Once the new member was inside the circle, they had to help balance the balloons already in the air plus any additional balloons that they may have had aloft. Staff members learned that more can be accomplished as a team than as one individual.

Photo of the Week - November 16, 2008
Submitted by Marci Dickens, Livingston High School, November 17, 2008

LHS - Photo of the Week - This week’s lesson in Mrs. Dickens’ LHS Photojournalism class was colorization. Students were to take a photograph and only leave a part of it colored. Mrs. Dickens was looking for sharp photos and neat, eye-catching colorization. Senior, Alex Little, did a great job with her photograph. The color was just enough to make the wheel barrow and fence stand out. Make sure to check out the color version on-line!

Jr. High Boys Basketball Opens 08-09 Season @ Lufkin
Submitted by Coach Adams, Cruickshank, Wheeler, Villani, Nettles, LJH Athletics, November 17, 2008

LJH - The 7th Grade Boys "Green" team opened their first Jr. High basketball season with tough, 5A Lufkin. Although the 7th Grade fell to Lufkin 44-12, they showed everyone that they will have true basketball talent. For only having three days of practice following football season, the Lions showed that they know and understand the game of basketball and are willing to play hard in any situation. Xavier Hutchinson led the Lions in scoring, posting 7 points. Josh Joubert also contributed, adding 2 for the Lions. The 7th Grade Green and White teams will both play at White Oak (New Caney) next Thursday, 11/20/08, beginning at 4:30 pm.

The 8th Grade Boys "Green" team continued their winning streak of 14 games (1-0 this season), in a battle with the Lufkin Panthers last night in Lufkin. The Lions quickly took a commanding 15-point lead early in the first half, but Lufkin responded, bring the game within 4 twice, early in the second half. Jacory Thomas led the Lions in scoring, posting an outstanding 29 points. Chevoski Collins added 9 points and several assists, while Marquis Thomas put up 6 points and led the Lions in rebounding. Anfernee Wilson played a great defensive game, and controlled the ball with authority in crucial situations. He also added 7 points for the Lions. Livingston's 8th Grade Lions look to remain unbeaten in their Jr. High careers next week at White Oak. 8th Grade Green and White teams will play, beginning at 4:30 pm.
