Photos by Steve Salley, Livingston Junior High School
Family Science Night #1 was held on Thursday, October 4, in the Livingston Junior High Cafeteria. About 120 people were educated and entertained with over twenty amazing science demonstrations.
The audience witnessed the fierce fire jug, flying toilet paper, run-away beads, bloody paper, and many other demonstrations and activities.
Food, drink, and door prizes were included with the night's program at no cost to participants.
The next Family Science Night is scheduled for Thursday, December 6, 2007, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Bernoulli's Principle will be the program topic and the evening will include hands-on activities, "make-it take-it" projects, and competition for prizes.
Family Science Nights are sponsored by the Quest Club (Science Club) at Livingston Junior High School ... "where Science is fun!"

Flame Tests - Detecting Metal Ions
Photos by Steve Salley, Livingston Junior High School
In Mr. Salley's 8th grade science class this week, students have been studying the organization of and trends within the periodic table. As an extension, in lab, they have learned that certain metals emit a specific, identifying color when heated/flamed in the Bunsen burner. This is a valuable tool in identifying compounds containing unknown metals.
Students were given seven metallic compounds dissolved in solution. They dipped a Q-Tip into each solution and recorded the color of the flame emitted by each metal. Careful observation was critical as several metals burned varying shades of red, requiring students to give specific color descriptions.
Upon completion of testing, the students obtained an unknown compound from the teacher, flame tested the compound, used their collected data, and identified the metal in the unknown. Amazingly, the success rate was 100% ... but then again, this is Livingston Junior High ... "where Science is fun!"

The Intermediate 5th grade students have been studying and learning about Native Americans. To culmminate this unit, we were visited by Sharon Miller from the Alabama-Coushatta Reservation. She told us about the history of the tribe and how they ended up in our area. She also showed us many of the crafts that they make today on the reservation. Thank you to Mrs. Miller for her great presentation.

“Sight Night” Places Focus On Giving This Halloween
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston Intermediate School
This year, some Livingston kids will collect more than candy for Halloween. They will help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in our community.
Livingston students are participating in “Sight Night”, a project to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and deliver them to our local Lions Club so that the glasses can be recycled and delivered to people who cannot afford them.
Students in Paula Franklin’s class will decorate special containers with the “Sight Night” logo for collection of the glasses. They will place the containers in the main office at each school campus, as well as in local businesses and churches. Look for used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home. Please drop them off wherever you find a special “Sight Night” drop off container. Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply. Whether the glasses are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out’, your glasses could change how someone sees the world.
The students will pick up the containers on October 31st so please don’t wait! Get your glasses to one of our “Sight Night” containers today!

Band is Excellent at Contest
Submitted by David Powell, LHS Royal Brigade
On Saturday the 13th, the LHS Royal Brigade traveled to Cleveland to participate in the Cleveland Invitational Marching Festival. This is a preparatory competition which helps bands get ready for the UIL Region marching competition which will be held Saturday October 20 at Little Cypress-Mauriceville HS. Chosen Best In Class 4A, the Royal Brigade returned with a rating of Excellent, which is a good rating, but less that what they had hoped for.
The band hopes to use the critique given them by the judges in Cleveland to fine tune their performance and bring home a Superior rating from UIL. These students have been working hard during and after school since August 1 in preparation for this contest, which is one of the two UIL organizational contests for bands.
After this contest, the band will begin preparing for Concert season and the individual student competitions held between December and March. Continue to support the Royal Brigade in their quest to be SUPERIOR.

Lady Lions Get a Victory!
Submitted by Celsea McGauhey, Livingston ISD Athletics
After three long years of heartache and loss, the Livingston Lady Lions won their first district game at home against the Caney Creek Panthers this past Friday. The Lady Lions showed great teamwork, spirit and aggressiveness as the forced five games to finally win the match. The team was lead in kills by Senior TraNiqua Dishmon, Junior Kayla Ross and Freshman Daylyn Harris. The team also had many successful blocks by Dishmon, Ross, Harris and Senior Chelsea Scoggin. Senior Kortni Bodnar gave her fair share of back row attacks, assists and serves – proving why she is the team’s defensive specialist. The entire team showed great hustle on the court with digs and attackes. The win comes late in the season but shows that the program has progressed and the future looks bright.
The Freshman Lady Lions were also victorious Friday night as the improved their district record to 2 wins. The JV Lady Lions went into three games and lost a hard fought battle but showed great skill on the court.
The scores for the game were as followed:
Varsity vs. Lady Panthers
12-25 (L), 27-25 (W), 25-12 (W), 25-27 (L), 15-8 (W)
JV vs. Lady Panthers
25-17 (W), 23-25 (L), 19-25 (L)
Freshman vs. Lady Panthers
30-28 (W), 25-18 (W)
The Lady Lions play their last home game this Tuesday, October 16 against the Waller Bulldogs with JV & Freshman starting at 4:30 and Varsity to follow. This will also be senior night.

GREEN TEAM
Game 1: 19-25
Game 2: 14-25
The lady lions started off strong in game 1 but fell to the lady bulldogs. The girls started playing better together toward the end of the game but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Kylie Howard, Cara Leslie, and Kelly McLendon put up good hits during the match.
WHITE TEAM
Game 1: 14-25
Game 2: 25-22
Game 3: 21-25
The girls got off to a slow start lost the first game 14 to 25. In the second game they came together as a team Keoshea Wilson, Megan Vest, and D’Andrea Youngblood had some great serves. While Brittany Crow, Kortni Weigreffe, and Sammantha Burnett covered the court, we won the second game 25 to 22. In the third game we came up short but put up a very good fight and fell to our first district defeat 21 to 25.

GREEN TEAM
The Lady Lions played their best game yet against Waller in the first game. They were starting to realize where and when to be at certain positions on the court and united as one. However, in the second game the Lady Lions became a little discouraged when we got down in points and were not able to walk away with a victory. Hopefully we will see Waller again in the district tournament and come up with a win. The top servers in both games last night were Ashley Ingle, Mckenzie Criddle and Randee Crawford. Emily Moore and Tatyana Nickson were the most aggressive.
