Game Warden Visits TCE Kindergarten
Submitted by Bria Morris, Timber Creek Elementary
Suzanne Cotton came to educate the kindergarten and Pre-K students on what Game Warden's do and all the responsibility they have across the state. She showed all the students many animals that were not supposed to be killed. The most exciting attraction was the alligator she brought. She discussed different things to do if you see alligators and talked to the children about not touching or trapping wild animals.

Submitted by Coach Ellis, Livingston Jr. High
This past Saturday, October the 13th, the FCA Students went to the a Game Day rally at the University of Houston. While at the rally, the students were challenged to deepen their faith, commitment and attitudes. Coach Art Briles, head football coach for U of H, spoke to the students about what they can do to excel in their particular sport. We also heard from three of the Cougar football players. After the rally, the students attended the football game between the University of Houston Cougars and the Rice University Owls. For most of the students, this was the first collegiate game they had been to.

5th Grade Students Create Masks
Submitted by Erica Dodge, Livingston Intermediate School
5th grade art students are busy making masks to correlate with their studies of the Mayas and Incas. First, students looked at different Indian pictures and symbols and drew the mask on paper. Then, they used plaster strips to make a mask base over a plastic form. When the mask was dry, they drew their designs from their original paper onto the mask and painted it. Browse our photo gallery to see some wonderful creations.

“Sight Night” Places Focus On Giving This Halloween
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston Intermediate School
This year, some Livingston kids will collect more than candy for Halloween. They will help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in our community.
Livingston students are participating in “Sight Night”, a project to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and deliver them to our local Lions Club so that the glasses can be recycled and delivered to people who cannot afford them.
Students in Paula Franklin’s class will decorate special containers with the “Sight Night” logo for collection of the glasses. They will place the containers in the main office at each school campus, as well as in local businesses and churches. Look for used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home. Please drop them off wherever you find a special “Sight Night” drop off container. Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply. Whether the glasses are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out’, your glasses could change how someone sees the world.
The students will pick up the containers on October 31st so please don’t wait! Get your glasses to one of our “Sight Night” containers today! |

GT Students Bring in Experts for Bible Project
Submitted by Jim Zeigler, LHS GT Department
With the help of local genealogists Gladys & Clifford May, LHS students from Mrs. Evans’ Independent Study class have come even closer to solving a mystery of history: an antique family Bible with a copyright date of 1895.
The real mystery is not the book itself, but rather the plethora of handwritten notes and newspaper clippings contained within. All clues pointed to a family in a small town in Kentucky called Lebanon. Even armed with this knowledge, however, the class couldn’t determine what the next step should be. But with the skills and expertise brought by the Mays, the class took on the daunting task of unraveling the tangled mess of information they had gleaned.
“Mr. & Mrs. May have been incredibly helpful to us. I know that we would not be this far along with the project without their help. The time and effort that they have put into tracing the family tree of every lead that we get, and scanning and preserving the Bible itself, is invaluable,” remarked teacher Deana Evans. Along with their professional know-how, the Mays unlocked a valuable tool of the trade called Heritage Quest - an online database of U.S. Census archives dating back to 1840. Surprisingly, some of the generations of family members have led us to Missouri, Connecticut, Florida and even Texas! The students have also enjoyed using Heritage Quest to research their own family tree. Students also visited with Pattie Myers, LHS Instructional Specialist who was the person who brought the Bible to the class for study.
Stay tuned for the next update on the historic bible project, as the students continue to try to find a close living descendent.
(Members of the GT class and Gladys and Cifford May will be presenting their findings thus far to the Polk County Heritage Society at their monthly meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 16th, from 5 to 6 o’clock.)

LHS Student Council Paint Paw-Prints
Submitted by Cole Hermes, Livingston High School Student Council
The Livingston High School Student Council, which now consists of 47 members, painted the Lion paw prints on Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. the members that attended were Brandon Beavers, Cole Hermes, Jordan Loftin, Nathan Blakley, Maria Mendez, Jessa Rossow, Amanda Gilbert, Adriana Celedon, B.J. McKissick, and Shauna Hoover. This was the first set of Student Council hours that we finished though not every one of the members were able to be in attendance. There was a special moment at the end in which all of the participants signed the last paw print. For the seniors in the group, it was really special because it is their last year and to know that they rekindled this tradition was very special.
