Billy Cummings Joins LISD Apple Corps
Submitted by Gregg Faith, LISD Public Information Officer

For 23 years, Billy Cummings has been a leader on his campus in the department of custodial/maintenance. Over the course of those 23 years, he has grown in his ability to do his job well, to lead others, and to work with humility and respect for those around him, qualities that make him an ideal candidate for the Livingston ISD Apple Corps, and on October 15, 2007 he was inducted during the meeting of the LISD Board of Trustees

Billy Cummings is a graduate of Leggett High School who came to Livingston High School on August 20, 1984. Prior to coming to work with Livingston he worked as a supervisor on the local housing project and spent three years working on the railroad. He has been married for 25 years to his wife Pat Cummings and has five children.  Billy’s training in his current position was short and simple, as six months after he was hired, his current superior passed away suddenly and Billy was literally handed a large set of keys by then principal Judson Pritchard and asked to take on the large role of leading the High School custodial maintenance department.

Billy recounts his early days with the district as a learning experience, having slowly taught him the things that make him a stronger and more efficient leader today. He credits his strong relationship with God to showing him, as the years have gone by, to live his life with humility and concern for others, two characteristics that make him an ideal helper and a strong employee. Billy says that when he first began his career, he struggled with accepting change, but over the years, life has shown him the value of treating your superiors, as well as your employees, with respect and working hard to maintain good relationships with those around you. He has also come to value change and the process of new ideas.

Billy’s unique position on the High School campus involves knowing how to adapt to change. From year to year, principal to principal, Billy and his staff have been asked to know how to plan and maintain a building and set-up that is never the same as the year before. As LHS continues to grow and morph into a campus of portable buildings and additions, Billy has shown the ability to learn new things and to plan for the future.

Billy believes that it is always important to be looking for ways to improve and stresses that if you are not moving forward, you are moving backwards. He believes it is important to work smarter as opposed to just working harder.

During his time with Livingston High School, Billy has worked with five different principals and countless numbers of teachers and employees. He says the most difficult thing about his job is the large variety of personalities that you must deal with, but also credits that variety of people as being one of the best things about his job. No day is just like the other.

Anyone who has worked with or on the High School campus knows the importance of finding Billy when you need something done, as no one knows the building and all of its quirks and qualities better than Billy and his staff.  For his dedication to always improving as both a leader and an employee, Billy Cummings is now a member of the LISD Apple Corp.

Dr. Bud Visits TCE Kindergarten
Submitted by Kelly Taylor, Timber Creek Elementary

TCE kindergartners have been learning about community helpers. On Tuesday October 16, Dr. Bud came to share his knowledge. He explained that his job is to help all kinds of animals that become sick or injured. It is also his job to help prevent animals from becoming ill. Snowball, the clinic's blood donor dog, accompanied him. Snowball loves children and enjoyed getting her "kid fix" when all the children loved on her. Pictured is Dr. Bud with the entire kindergarten class at TCE.

2nd Graders Mail Letters for Food Drive
Submitted by Javada Smith, Timber Creek Elementary

Mrs. Faith and Mrs. Smith's second grade classes mailed a letter to their parents about the food drive. This was an awesome experience. One student said "Mmm this envelope taste good!" Another student said "This is my first time to mail a letter!" When asked what they liked most about mailing a letter the students said they couldn't wait until it arrived. They are trying to guess how long it would take to get there. Some would be checking their mailbox as soon as they got home. We'll let you know how long it took as soon as it arrives! This was a great way to let parents know we need more can food items and an eye opening experience on how to address an envelope.

Submitted by Christy Cross, Livingston Intermediate School

Livingston Intermediate School students are coming to school everyday! So many of them...that 221 students had "Perfect Attendance" for the first six weeks of school. “Sight Night” Places Focus On Giving This Halloween
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston Intermediate School

This year, some Livingston kids will collect more than candy for Halloween.  They will help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in our community.

Livingston students are participating in “Sight Night”, a project to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and deliver them to our local Lions Club so that the glasses can be recycled and delivered to people who cannot afford them.

Students in Paula Franklin’s class will decorate special containers with the “Sight Night” logo for collection of the glasses.  They will place the containers in the main office at each school campus, as well as in local businesses and churches.  Look for used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home.  Please drop them off wherever you find a special “Sight Night” drop off container.  Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply.  Whether the glasses are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out’, your glasses could change how someone sees the world.

The students will pick up the containers on October 31st so please don’t wait!  Get your glasses to one of our “Sight Night” containers today!
