Dyslexia Night Informs Parents
Submitted by LISD Dyslexia Teachers

Livingston Intermediate, Pine Ridge Elementary and Timber Creek Elementary joined forces to host a night of learning for parents of students with dyslexic tendencies.  The night offered pizza, drinks and cookies as well as a presentation on characteristics of dyslexia, and how intense intervention corrects how the brain processes letters and sounds.  Students were invited to demonstrate some of the activities they do in class to help them learn to read.  Special thanks to Alvene Galloway, Kevin Hendrix and Ruth Dominy for their hard work in preparing this event.

1st Graders Support Our Heroes!
Submitted by Kristy Long, Timber Creek Elementary

The first grade classes are supporting our heroes serving in the military. Each month we will write letters, draw pictures, or make cards to be included in care packages sent by F.A.I.T.H. (Family and Individuals Thanking Heroes). This group meets once each month and packs and ships care packages to military people connected to Polk and San Jacinto counties. We want to show our heroes how much we appreciate them.

"All About Work" at TCE
Submitted by Laura Ausburn, Paula Faith, Kim Munson, and Robbie Vinson, Timber Creek Elementary

The 2nd graders at TCE have been learning "All About Work" during social studies. The students learned that in order to earn money, they must first do a job. The students quickly went to work in their bookmark factories and created bookmarks. When the bookmarks were ready to sell, the factory workers went to kindergarten to sell their product. The kindergarten customers bought the bookmarks with behavior bucks. After the selling was complete, the 2nd grade factory workers volunteered their time to read to their customers. The 2nd graders loved reading to their new friends and the kindergarteners were eager to hear a new story.

Scientists in TCE Third Grade
Submitted by Ann Hindsman, Timber Creek Elementary

Mrs. Hindsman’s third grade scientists have been studying about ecosystems, habitats, and organisms.  Today they discovered that many animals have special adaptations which allow them to survive in their environments, such as birds having different beaks.  Students had to decide which type of “beak” would be best suited for various kinds of foods such as seeds, nuts, water, and worms.

Friday afternoon a few of the Livingston High Varsity football players were caught trying out for Kindergarten’s 50’s Day Band at Timber Creek.  Andrew Boyce, Drew Nelson, Caleb Bartholmey, Isaac Crawford and Corey Dickerson showed the judges their best moves, but decided they better stick to football!  Hopefully they’ll come back this next Friday to see Timber Creek in full swing during 50’s Day.

Kindergarten kids in Mrs. Holliman’s room have been studying about spiders.  They learned that spiders are not insects, but arachnids instead.  Spiders spin webs and catch their dinner (insects) using the webs.  Spiders have 8 legs.  Students wrapped up the week by making spider head bands.

LJH is "Cultivating Cubs"
Submitted by Don Prather, Livingston Junior High School

Livingston Junior High School has started a "Cultivating Cubs" program to bring knowledge of community and careers to local Junior High students. The program describes its goals as follows:

Although junior high school students are not developmentally able to make final decisions about their future, they are curious about the learning and earning opportunities in their future.  Satisfying this curiosity is one purpose of “Cultivating Cubs.”

Although junior high students are still their parents’ children, they are also establishing themselves individually and often seeking help on their own.  Providing resources is another purpose of “Cultivating Cubs.”

Although LJHS aims to educate the whole child, we need to place most of our emphasis on academic essentials.  A third purpose of “Cultivating Cubs” is making opportunities available to learn some things that are not in the core curriculum.

“Cultivating Cubs” is a daily opportunity for LJHS students to meet and interact with representatives of colleges and universities, local social service organizations, local religious organizations, military recruiters, and others who offer assistance to teenagers.  One “Cultivating Cubs” visitor is invited to be present at lunch every day.  The guests set up displays of their organization, hand out information, answer questions, and generally enjoy the experience of cultivating our Cubs.

So far the program has been a great success with leaders from all across the community participating to bring information to local students.

We're Not Magicians--We're Mathematicians!!!
Submitted by Scott Morgan, Livingston High School

Mr. Morgan's 6th grade math classes have been working really hard on mastering skills in the new Saxon Math Program. Some of the skills studied have been angles, fractions, decimals, percents, number conversions, measurement conversions, ratios, rates, and problem solving. We are in this "ship" together and plan to "sail toward Exemplary" status.

GT Field Trip
Submitted by Jennifer Dunson, Livingston Junior High

Livingston Junior High GT students traveled to Galveston last week where they participated in the TAMU - Marine Science Department's "Floating Classroom" program. Led by two graduate students, students traveled to one of the more primitive areas of Galveston Island to tour the salt marshes.

They first learned about the plant life in a salt marsh. Students were interested in the idea of "sacrificial leaves" - where some plants will separate the salt water and the fresh water and put all of the salt water into one "sacrificial" leaf. The instructors then discussed the water content of the marshes and taught about the combination of fresh water and salt water that makes up this unique ecosystem.

After tightening their shoelaces to avoid losing their footwear in the mud, students ventured out into the salt marshes. By stretching long nets across the water, they were able to catch several different species of young marine life that live in the salt marshes. Although they caught hermit crabs, adolescent blue crab, juvenile shrimp, and bay anchovies, the two favorites had to be the "sea snot" and the "sea warts". Students loved holding the "sea snot" - it is a type of non-stinging jellyfish that has two rear-ends and no brain! "Sea warts" turned out to be plants that only absorb and store the salt in the water. They looked like tiny bananas, but were nothing but a pod of sea salt!

Students had a great day investigating the salt marshes and getting a taste of marine biology!

LJH Student Leadership Team Meets
Submitted by Jennifer Dunson, Livingston Junior High

Your Number's Up
Submitted by Michelle Moore, Livingston Intermediate School

Mrs. Moore's 5th grade math class worked on place value and dicision making as they played a math card game with their partner. The object of the game was to build the largest or smallest number (whole numbers and decimals). The goal was determineed by the players at the beginning of each game. On each turn, players selected a card and location for the value of that card. Players must slect a different place on each turn. Players had to name the place before they were allowed to put the drawn card number in that location. Locations specified must be vacant and all placement decisions were final. Play continued until all places were filled. When all placed were filled, the winner was declared by comparing their numbers. Once the game was over, students had to justify their decision making in their Math spiral.
