Livingston Grad meets Noble Laureate
Submitted by Kathy Stark, LISD Teacher

Livingston High School - Veronica Stark a 2006 graduate of Livingston High School and a Sophmore at Texas A&M has been hired to work in the physics lab at the University.   Dr. Dudley Herschbach a molecular chemist and professor at Harvard University is the director of the project.  In 1986, Dr. Herschbach and two other scientists won the Nobel Prize for developing methods to test how chemical reactions take place between molecules.  He has come to Texas A&M on a sabbatical to teach chemical physics classes and work at the Institute for Quantum Studies.

Describing her work Veronica said “We're building a particle beam to slow down and trap O2 molecules.  We have a vacuum chamber and inside is this motor that spins at a very high speed while emitting O2 molecules in the opposite direction of the way it's spinning.  Think of that like throwing a ball out the back of a moving car.  If you throw the ball out at 50 mph and the car is going 55 mph, then the ball if only actually going 5 mph.  That is one way we slow the molecules down.  In the vacuum we introduce Xenon gas which will further slow the oxygen down.  We also cool it down with liquid nitrogen.  I don't know what this technique or apparatus will be used for, and we don't really care.  We're interested in proving that this process is possible, let the engineers figure out how it's useful.”
