“Sight Night” Places Focus On Giving This Halloween
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston ISD GT Program, October 15, 2008
GT Program - This year, some Livingston kids will collect more than candy for Halloween.  They will help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in our community.

Livingston students are participating in “Sight Night”, a project to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and deliver them to our local Lions Club so that the glasses can be recycled and delivered to people who cannot afford them.

Students in Paula Franklin’s class will decorate special containers with the “Sight Night” logo for collection of the glasses.  They will place the containers in the main office at each school campus, as well as in local businesses and churches.  Look for used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home.  Please drop them off wherever you find a special “Sight Night” drop off container.  Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply.  Whether the glasses are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out’, your glasses could change how someone sees the world. The students will pick up the containers on October 31st  so please don’t wait!  Get your glasses to one of our “Sight Night” containers today!

Sixth Grade Students Learn Checking
Submitted by Sherry Wilson, Livingston Junior High School, October 15, 2008
LIVINGSTON JUNIOR HIGH - Mrs. Wilson’s 6th Grade Pre-AP students are learning what it takes to live on their own.  During the first six weeks, students made posters that portrayed what their “dream” homes, cars, and jobs would be. Posters included everything from 8000 square foot homes to lavish Lamborghini’s.  Students were then given a budget based on the average salary of a Polk County resident. The students had a very hard time with the reality and the true costs associated with “living on their own”. From that part of the project, students then moved to the next phase which meant learning how to keep a checking account.

On Monday, Mrs. Wilson’s students started learning the correct way to write checks, how to keep a check register, and how to reconcile their statements each month. These projects are important to the students because it is imperative that they see now what they need to earn just to have the lifestyle they (realistically) want, and to seriously think about what they need to do now to be able to earn the income they want for the rest of their lives.

A huge thanks goes out to Kari Parker and Melody Kellar from First State Bank in Livingston for donating the checking account workbooks to the students. The kids absolutely loved writing those checks!

JH Volleyball Results - October 13
Submitted by Lauren Edmonds, LISD Athletics, October 15, 2008

8th Grade Green
The lady lions added another win to their record last night in Lufkin (25-14, 25-12).  The team displayed great serves and teamwork.  The ladies played at a much higher level than their opponent, which made for an easy victory.

8th Grade White
Once again the Lady Lions 8th grade white team was victorious.  Defeating Lufkin 25 to 15 and 25 to 20.  The Ladies played hard, Caitlin Warren, Shea Tomlinson, Alila Flores, and Kristine Newman played with good spirits, Destine Mathews, and Sommer Fleetwood had some powerful serves which lead the Lady Lions to the victory over Lufkin. All ladies played great...  Coach Cooper

7th Grade Green
Last night, the 7th grade lady lion volleyball Green team defeated Lufkin in two games, 25-12 and 25-19.  Kelsie Fuller’s powerful serves were too much for the other team and she served 15 consecutive points during the first game.  During the second game, Jordan Noble and Sabrina Rodriguez’s serves contributed to the win.  Overall, the team came together and played as one and each girl played with heart stepping up their passing and serving to bring home a win for the Lady lions.

7th Grade White
The girls lost in two games against Lufkin.  The girls are working better as a team but our efforts are not being rewarded because of our poor serving. We did have one player last night who earned us several points off her serves, Amber McCarthy, great job.

The 7th and 8th grade green teams will be playing in the Lufkin tournament on Saturday.  The lady lions travel to New Caney, for their last road trip of the season, to face White Oak, next Monday.  The following Monday, they will face the Lufkin lady panthers again in the final game, which will be at home.
