Submitted by Laura Ouedraogo, Livingston High School, October 15, 2008
LIVINGSTON HIGH SCHOOL - Students are using motion detectors to understand linear and non-linear motion in Laura Ouedraogo's Pre-Algebra I classes. Students took the motion detectors out in the hallway and were given different scenarios to walk. They then saw the graph of the walk they made. By walking at a steady pace or a constant rate, their graphs were a line but by speeding up or slowing down that their graphs were a curve or nonlinear. The students enjoyed the project and were fascinated by seeing Algebra applications at work.

“Sight Night” Places Focus On Giving This Halloween
Submitted by Paula Franklin, Livingston ISD GT Program, October 15, 2008
GT Program - This year, some Livingston kids will collect more than candy for Halloween. They will help Give the Gift of Sight by gathering used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in our community.
Livingston students are participating in “Sight Night”, a project to collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses and deliver them to our local Lions Club so that the glasses can be recycled and delivered to people who cannot afford them.
Students in Paula Franklin’s class will decorate special containers with the “Sight Night” logo for collection of the glasses. They will place the containers in the main office at each school campus, as well as in local businesses and churches. Look for used prescription and non-prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses in every nook and cranny of your home. Please drop them off wherever you find a special “Sight Night” drop off container. Children’s glasses are especially in need, as they are in high demand but in short supply. Whether the glasses are big or small, fashionably ‘in’ or ‘out’, your glasses could change how someone sees the world. The students will pick up the containers on October 31st so please don’t wait! Get your glasses to one of our “Sight Night” containers today!

Global Warming: Fact or Myth?
Submitted by Amy Shumake, Livingston Junior High School, October 15, 2008
LIVINGSTON JUNIOR HIGH - Mrs. Shumake's 6th grade social studies classes just finished research over Global Warming and The Greenhouse Effect. Students learned about the controversy surrounding Global Warming. Is it really happening or not? Students made brochures to persuade an audience toward one side or the other side of the issue. As the students came to their own conclusions, they also learned about ways to take care of our environment regardless of climate changes. Come by room C204 at the Junior High and form your own opinion by viewing the display of awesome brochures. Great work guys!
Full of Energy
Submitted by Doreen Quibodeaux, Livingston Junior High School, October 15, 2008
LIVINGSTON JUNIOR HIGH - Sixth graders at Livingston Junior High School explore different energy sources in the lab. Nothing beats the smell of melting sugar…unless you prefer a whiff of raw beef liver being cooked by hydrogen peroxide! Students have studied chemical energy, thermal energy, radiant energy, wind energy, mechanical energy, and solar energy. "I’ve run out of energy!" says 6th grade Science teacher Doreen Quibodeaux.
