Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
Submitted by Kathryn Pedigo and Nancy Martin, Pine Ridge Elementary, October 1, 2008

Livingston – Counselors at Pine Ridge Elementary have extended the campus theme and book study to include our students. All students (K-3) have heard the lesson, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Children learned that we each carry around an invisible bucket. We are "bucket fillers" when we say and do nice things for others; we are "bucket dippers" when we are mean to others. Each day, in everything we do, we can either fill a bucket or dip into a bucket. The choice is ours.

Yearbook Staffers Don Creative Hats; Leave Ike Behind
Submitted by LHS Publications, Livingston High School, October 1, 2008

Livingston – In the midst of all of the chaos associated with the cleanup after Hurricane Ike, Marci Dickens and some of her yearbook staff attended the Taylor Publishing Intensity Workshop in Irving on September 19-21, as they had planned to do before the hurricane hit.

“When she (Mrs. Dickens) called to see if I wanted to go there wasn’t any hesitation,” section editor, Mandy Drager said. “We still didn’t have power or running water, so electricity and a hot shower sounded good to me.”

The ladies worked for three days to design and solidify the 2009 yearbook. They began on Friday just as they arrived and ate lunch as they worked. They got finished that evening and got to spend a little time in the hot tub and swimming pool relaxing before getting some sleep so they could start fresh the next morning.

"It was like a lottery drawing to see who got a shower first,” sponsor, Marci Dickens said. “It’s interesting to me what a little electricity and some hot water will do for morale.”

After the workshop ended on Sunday afternoon and the ladies were headed home, the bus emergency alarms came on.

For a while they thought they were going to be stuck sitting in a parking lot waiting for a bus and mechanic to come get them. Thankfully, between the bus driver and mechanic over the phone, the problems were resolved and they got to come home without further incident.

“These girls worked really hard all weekend,” Dickens said. “We went with three ideas and came home with one different, but very good one.”

The 2009 edition of the award-winning Lion’s Roar Yearbook may be purchased in the cafeteria on Thursday and Friday of this week for the introductory price of $60. Students must put down a deposit of at least $20 and pay the rest by Christmas break. Parents may download and print an order blank from the LHS Publication link on the district website or call Mrs. Dickens at 936-328-2267 during school hours.

Dickens Visits With Computer Maintenance Class
Submitted by Judy Powell, Livingston High School, October 1, 2008

Livingston – Mr. James Dickens, LISD Director of Technology, spoke with students in Mrs. Powell’s Computer Maintenance class on Wednesday. Mr. Dickens explained about the school network, the Internet filter, and how the district receives bandwidth for the Internet. Mr. Dickens also answered and discussed the students’ many questions about computers and networks.

Students in the Computer Maintenance class will have the opportunity to take exams to obtain their Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3). IC3 is a world-wide training and certification program which shows capability of using a broad range of computer technology – from basic hardware and software – to operating systems, applications, and the Internet.

LHS has made a commitment to offer our students the opportunity to earn industry certifications through many new and different courses. Certifications can help students differentiate themselves in today's competitive job market, broaden their employment opportunities by showcasing their advanced skills, and result in higher earning potential. Certification can also lead to increased job satisfaction. Research indicates that certified individuals have increased competence, productivity, and credibility with their employers, co-workers, and clients.

LHS offers PSAT/NMSQT to Juniors and Sophomores
Submitted by LHS Counselors, Livingston High School, September 30, 2008

Livingston - LHS will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) to their Juniors and Sophomores on Wednesday, October 15. Students who are college-bound are encouraged to take this test. The Juniors take the test free while the sophomores will need to pay $13.00. Checks or money orders will need to be made out to LHS. This particular test does several things: it enables the students to get the "feel" of the actual SAT college entrance exam, students can earn scholarships and academic recognition, it gives feedback and tools students can use to improve their skills for the actual SAT tests, it helps students begin the college search process.

The high school is coordinating with The Continuum Learning Center to take a practice PSAT test and recieve suggestions on how to improve their scores. Ms. Jackson will cover the highlights of "Things to Know" before you take the test.

When the actual PSAT/NMSQT scores come back the counselors will schedule a time to share information with both parents and students.

For further information, please contact Karri McKissick (PSAT coordinator)at the LHS Counselors' office.

Submitted by Tom Myers, LHS Chorale, September 23, 2008

Hurricane Ike is still copying his big sister, Rita. Because of the huge power/water/facility problems that many of our districts are dealing with, the location for this audition has not been decided at this time. For updated information, check the District Calendar at www.livingstonisd.com. or call the HS choir room after 2pm at (936)328-2261.

LHS to Retire Mark Moseley's Number
Submitted by Gregg Faith, Livingston ISD Communications, September 30, 2008

Livingston - During the pre-game ceremonies at the October 4, 2008 Lions Football game, the Livingston High School Athletics program will retire the number of place-kicker and former Livingston Lion #11 Mark Moseley.

Mark Moseley played for the Livingston Lions from 1962-1966 and went on to have a brilliant football career. In 1982, he was voted the National Football League’s Most Valuable Player – the first time in the NFL’s 75-year history that a kicker has ever been nominated or elected to such a prestigious position. The holder of numerous NFL kicking records, he has recently become eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame.

Mark began his football career in 1970, when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played for the Eagles for one year before returning to his home state of Texas, where he played for the Houston Oilers for nearly two years.

Mark Moseley came to the Washington Redskins in 1974, where he became an All-Pro and was so honored four times. In 1983, he set a single season scoring record of 161 points. He led the NFL in scoring four separate seasons, which placed him sixth on the all-time scoring list at that time. Mark also kicked 300 field goals in his career, placing him fifth on the NFL’s ALL-TIME scoring list.

After leaving Washington in 1985, Mark Moseley finished his career in Cleveland, where he helped the Cleveland Browns win the AFC Central Division Title. Mark retired from professional football in 1987 and became a full-time businessman. After gaining a great deal of experience in commercial real estate, he used his marketing and selling skills to launch his own business enterprises – Mark Moseley’s Travel, Mark Moseley’s Famous Fries and Extra Point Productions. He also holds summer kicking camps for young people.

Mark strongly believes in helping people, as evidenced by his many civic awards, including the International Association of Lions Club Humanitarian Award, Sales and Marketing Executive of Washington Award, the Marine Corps Scholarship Association Sportsman of the Year Award, and in 1982 he was named Washingtonian of the Year.

Additionally, Mark Moseley has been associated with MADD and SADD, Boy Scouts of America, Cerebral Palsy, United Way, the American Heart Association, and many other organizations that help people. He has devoted a great deal of time and energy towards fund-raising activities for the Washington D.C. Ronald McDonald House, a home away from home for seriously ill children. Mark Moseley was also named a Livingston High School Oustanding Graduate.
