State of Mine
Submitted by Kristina Miller, Livingston Junior High School, October 20, 2008

LJH - Students in Mrs. Miller's Social Studies class are developing knowledge of map skills by creating their own state. Students have selected a theme for their state such as "Hot Dogs" "Lions" and "Chocolate". They have studied about various landform types and natural resources. Students have drawn landforms on their states and labeled the natural resources. As part of the requirement for the project students will also be drawing a map scale and creating a map legend.

Local Student is AP Scholar with Honors
Submitted by Deana Evans, Livingston High School, October 20, 2008

LHS - Jessica Dominguez, Valedictorian of the 2008 graduating class of Livingston High School has earned the designation of AP Scholar with Honors from the College Board in recognition of her exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. She qualified for this prestigious award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scoring a grade of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP®) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.  About 18 percent of the more than 1.6 millionstudents worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

Students took AP Exams in May 2007 after completing challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

Most of the nation’s colleges and universities award credit, advanced placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams. More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying grades. In 2008, thirty-seven AP Exams were offered in a wide variety of subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free-response (essay or problem-solving or oral response) questions (except for the Studio Art exam which evaluates students’ original artwork).

The College Board is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the association is composed of more than 5,200 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools, and 3,500 colleges through major programs and services in college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among its best-known programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®). The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity, and that commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities, and concerns.

Game Warden Visits Local Kindergarten Classes
Submitted by Bria Morris, Timber Creek Elementary, October 20, 2008

TCE - Game Warden Chuck Cotton came to Timber Creek Elementary to visit and speak with kindergarten children about his important job in the community.  The game warden showed the children the Operation Game Thief trailer which holds many different types of game that were illegally killed; and the illegal things used to kill them.  He spoke with them about safety and how he catches people doing illegal things.
He also gave each child a Jr. Game Warden badge.  He had them raise their right hand and repeat an oath with him.  The children did a great job and told him they would definitely call him if they see someone doing bad things.  Thank you Mr. Cotton for visiting with our local students!

Mixing Things Up
Submitted by Sarah Dickens, Livingston Intermediate School, October 20, 2008

LIS - Students at Livingston Intermediate School recently completed a lab on making mixtures. The students mixed things with water and vinegar and decided if it was a mixture or solution. The kids knew that if it was a mixture it could be separated and we could see all the different parts even after we mixed it. If it was a solution then it couldn't be separated and you couldn't see all the different ingredients. The students had a lot of fun learning about mixtures!

Lufkin Tournament

7th Grade Green Team:
The ladies played hard and made improvements in their game.  Jordan Agnew and Shelby Staples stood out with strong serves and Sabrina Rodriguez contributed great passes.

8th Grade Green Team:
The lady lions prevailed in every set that they played during the tournament, leaving Lufkin with with an undefeated tournament record and 1st place medals around their neck.  Their opponents for the day were Lufkin, Diboll, Rusk and Huntington.  None of the teams were a match for the strong lady lions.  If you have not gotten a chance to see these ladies play, you have missed out on seeing one of the best 8th grade volleyball teams to come through Livingston Junior High.  Your last chance to catch these girls in action is Monday, October 27 at home against Lufkin.

The Green and White teams travel to New Caney to face White Oak Middle School today.  The Cubs travel to Diboll to play the lady jacks.
