Scientists at Work
Submitted by TCE 2nd Grade Teachers, Timber Creek Elementary, October 2, 2008
Livingston – The 2nd graders at TCE have been thinking like scientists and acting like scientists. Students learned that being a scientist can be difficult yet rewarding. The students learned that scientists use tools to discover things from our past. To practice being a scientist, students were given a tool (toothpick) and a search area (chocolate chip cookie) to dig up pieces from the past. Many students were able to get whole pieces out of their search area. Students also worked through the scientific method with several experiments last week. Students formed hypothesis about what would happen to pennies in vinegar and salt and then they began the experiment. The students made observations over several days and then presented their results. They concluded the week of being scientists by observing salt crystals and finger prints. The students especially loved using the magnifying glass for their observations.

They also learned about John Chapman, nicknamed "Johnny Appleseed." He was born on September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts. He set out to explore the wilderness to the west. He planted apple orchards with the pouch of seeds that he carried with him. When the pioneer families arrived, Johnny gave them young apple trees and apple seeds to start more apple orchards.

Submitted by LHS Counselors, Livingston High School, September 30, 2008
Livingston - LHS will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) to their Juniors and Sophomores on Wednesday, October 15. Students who are college-bound are encouraged to take this test. The Juniors take the test free while the sophomores will need to pay $13.00. Checks or money orders will need to be made out to LHS. This particular test does several things: it enables the students to get the "feel" of the actual SAT college entrance exam, students can earn scholarships and academic recognition, it gives feedback and tools students can use to improve their skills for the actual SAT tests, it helps students begin the college search process.
The high school is coordinating with The Continuum Learning Center to take a practice PSAT test and recieve suggestions on how to improve their scores. Ms. Jackson will cover the highlights of "Things to Know" before you take the test.
When the actual PSAT/NMSQT scores come back the counselors will schedule a time to share information with both parents and students.
For further information, please contact Karri McKissick (PSAT coordinator)at the LHS Counselors' office.
