Royal Brigade Trailer Upgrade
Submitted by David Powell, Livingston ISD Royal Brigade
For many years now, the LHS Royal Brigade has traveled to distant locations carrying their valuable and bulky equipment in a big trailer. At one time, this trailer had the Lion head logo and name of the Royal Brigade emblazoned on the sides. Over the past several years, weather and time had taken its toll on the outward appearance of the band trailer. The paint had faded and much of the sign work had begun to fade and peel as well.

The Livingston Band Boosters, who originally bought the trailer and donated it to LISD, decided that it was time to act. The boosters arranged for body shop at Bounds Autoplex to sand and paint the trailer and the folks at LISD Transportation applied new logo decals replacing the old faded ones. Once again, the Royal Brigade will be able arrive at any location, proudly announcing their presence.
Thanks again to Bounds Autoplex, LISD Transportation and The Livingston Band Boosters!
Learning Computer Hardware in the Classroom
Submitted by Jennifer Johnson, Livingston High School

Students in Ms. Johnson’s computer classes are learning about computer hardware. The students learn to identify components such as the power supply, hard drive, CPU, motherboard, RAM and expansion cards. After learning the components, they actually see inside a computer to learn how all the parts are installed and how they work together. |

Parents can check child's grades on the Web
Internet program allows for monitoring student's progress
Livingston's middle and high schools have a new Internet-based program that allows parents to track their child's grades and attendance as often as they like.
Parents can go to the Livingston ISD Web site, click on the "Grades from Home" link and then "VSI" prompts, and type in an assigned user name and password. They're then able to check out how well their child is doing in class ... or whether they made it there on time or at all.
"This is a really powerful tool to enhance the important relationship between parents and student success at school," said Livingston ISD Superintendent, Dr. Darrell Myers. "... It's a tremendous opportunity for parents to keep track of their child's achievement and attendance."
Christy Cross, Livingston Intermediate principal, described the VSI program as a "great communications tool," and says that many parents will be excited about the opportunity to keep a close track on their student’s progress. Livingston ISD parents will receive log-in information in their child’s first progress report of the school year which should be arriving in the mail soon.
You may also visit www.livingstonisd.com to find more information about the program. The website for on-line grade reporting is www.lisdstudentinfo.com. (*Note: Attendance reports for the first three weeks of school are reported by hand as opposed to computer, therefore attendance reports on-line may not reflect actual absences at this time.)

Polishing Measuring Skills… Sharpening Minds
Submitted by Steve Salley, Livingston Junior High School
This week, Science classes at LJH have been engaged in making metric measurements using scientific tools and equipment, learning the importance of making accurate observations, and problem solving using critical thinking skills and the scientific methods.
Click Here to see the Photo Gallery!
Experiments and laboratory investigations have ranged from recording the temperature changes that occur during endothermic and exothermic reactions, to measuring the pH of unknown solutions using litmus paper and universal indicator paper, to hypothesizing and measuring the changes that occur in size, mass, volume, and density in a Gummy Bear placed in water overnight, and calculating the different densities of pennies made pre- and post 1983. Students also melted post 1983 pennies to discover that they contain less than 10% copper with a zinc core of over 90% whereas older pennies contain over 90% copper.
Through hands-on experiences and challenging lessons, we are preparing tomorrow’s scientists and leaders at Livingston Junior High… where “Science is Fun!”
Teachers include Vicki Gudgel, Lisa Hansen, and Lauren Rasbury (6th grade); Beth Baker, Juanita James, and Robert Langthorn (7th grade); Michelle Brumley, Lauren Edmonds, and Steve Salley (8th grade). |
